Recently, I sat down with my dear friend and colleague Dr Katie MacRae to discuss the nuances of doing what you love. Katie’s a chiropractor based in Manly, Australia, and I’ve known her both personally and professionally for over a decade. We studied together, we’ve published research together, and we’ve watched each other grow over nearly 10 years of friendship. And we both have our own journeys with burnout.
Even though we were seeing people with burnout come into our clinics, we were still somewhat blindsided by it when it happened to us. I find this to be particularly true for people who burnout doing what they love. That doesn’t just include health and fitness professionals, but also entrepreneurs, artists, self-employed people, carers, parents, and anyone who’s just getting a lot of meaning and purpose from what they do.
It’s an incredible thing to have a job that you love. In many ways, it can feel like the opposite of burnout: it’s energising, and fills up your cup. Burnout, if it happens, can feel like it came out of nowhere. It can be particularly confusing to have to navigate burnout when things were good, really good; particularly when, as was the case for both Katie and I, we were also our own bosses!
In this frank and honest conversation, Katie shares some of her own journey with burnout. We discuss some of the early warning signs, as well as recovery, and themes that come up along the way, like identity, relationships, boundaries, and guilt.
I hope this conversation offers you some tools and support to help navigate your own journey, whether you’re currently dealing with burnout, or looking for ways to grow your business in a sustainable way that supports you.
