Today I want to share my own journey with burnout.
As a health coach and a functional medicine practitioner, I’ve helped a lot of clients with their burnout, and yet I’ve never sat down to collate all my thoughts about my own journey in one place. I only realised retrospectively- as in, 2 or 3 years later- that what I had experienced was technically burnout, and at the same time, one of the reasons I’ve resisted the burnout narrative is because it can paint a history in a certain shade, suggesting that it was all bad bad bad, when in reality, for a really long time, it was so good good good, and then it just stopped being a right fit. There were many other factors at play that led me to move to Portugal and change nearly every aspect of my life (lol). Though I’m sure it influenced my decisions, burnout never dominated my story. This is true for many people that I work with: we can be both burnt out and still very functional. Part of recovery is learning to hold that complexity.
Everyone’s burnout journey is different, but I hope that my experience can be a teacher, or make someone feel less alone in what they’re going through.

It’s important to recognise that burnout is both a physical and a mental health condition, and there’s no one-size-fits-all recovery process. It requires creating personalised strategies that fit your unique set of symptoms and needs.
Burnout recovery is the responsibility of the individual, the employer, and society at large. It’s our body’s way of trying to communicate to us that something isn’t working. While it may not seem like it while you’re in it, burnout can be a profound, life-changing opportunity to get clear on what you want, and move towards a greater vision for yourself.
